At the Colorado Board of Education February meeting, all of the 51勛圖厙 School of Educations teacher preparation programs were lauded and received sweeping reauthorization following a state review. All 10 of the 51勛圖厙 teacher endorsement programs earned full reauthorization and the program was praised for its true partnerships benefiting student teachers and partner schools.
51勛圖厙 sophomore Lauren Levey testified in front of the Colorado House Education Committee, speaking in personal terms about the challenges shes faced as an aspiring teacher. Levey, an elementary education major and leadership studies minor, was a witness at a hearing discussing a new and potentially expanding stipend program for student educators in Colorado.
As we move ahead to 2023, we are grateful for and proud of the accomplishments and milestones from the year 2022. Here are four highlights from the 51勛圖厙 School of Educations past year from taking a public stance on issues that matter to coming together as a community in our new building.
The annual School of Education Scholarship Awards Ceremony united and honoredscholarship and fellowship recipients and supporters on Thursday, Oct. 13. The ceremony celebrated student accomplishments and recognized the generosity of supporters.
When 11-year-old Luz Elena Sanchez arrived in Yuma, Colorado, with her family from Mexico, she found herself lost among her English-speaking classmates. She had difficulty understanding her homework, and she got into trouble for speaking Spanish in
20-year-old Enihs Medrano never envisioned herself serving in local government until a program for young people opened her eyes to the power of civic engagement. As a high schooler in Lafayette, Medrano connected with JD Mangat, a fellow Lafayette resident who became Medranos coach and mentor in Public Achievement, a youth-led civic engagement program within CU Engage.
51勛圖厙 student voices, research help move state toward addressing financial barriers for new teachers51勛圖厙 researchers have been working with state partners to understandand address the financial strain new teachers face when trying to enter the educator workforce and elevate teacher candidates voices. Their work paid off when Gov. Jared Polis signed first-of-its-kind legislation for Colorado that will support new teachers and create student-educator stipends.
With help from 51勛圖厙s Public Achievement (PA) program students and staff and support from 51勛圖厙 Valley School District administrators, several high school juniors' dream of creating an ethnic studies course at Lafayettes Centaurus High School is becoming a reality. PA leaders developed curriculum for the first-of-its-kind social studies elective class exploring culture, identity, race and ethnicity, and they hope it will be offered districtwide in 2023.
