Reminder for J-1 students: Prior authorization required for on-campus employment
Students in J-1 visa status require ISSS authorization prior to beginning on-campus employment.
- This includes positions such as research or teaching assistantships, campus dining, library, or other university departments.
Before the employment start date, submit the On-Campus Employment Request e-form available in the MyISSS portal (Training/Employment-Related Forms) to report the on-campus employment to ISSS.
- ISSS will update your SEVIS record to include the on-campus employment.
Working without prior authorization is considered a violation of J-1 visa regulations and may have serious consequences for your immigration status.
Continued On-Campus Employment Reporting
A new On-Campus Employment Request e-form must be submitted:
- For each new on-campus position, and
- Every year, if your employment will extend beyond the initial one-year ISSS authorization.
On-campus employment authorization can only be issued in one-year increments.
If you have questions about on-campus employment eligibility or the authorization process, contact ISSS.
