Cheraw

The development of the blank block in Cheraw, Colorado, transforms an underutilized site into a vibrant community hub. Located in a central area and spanning a generous footprint, the site offers immense potential to become a safe, engaging space for children, families, and residents of all ages.

The project is organized around several key elements. At its heart is the Pavilion, designed as a central gathering space for social activities and community events. Equipped with solar panels, the Pavilion generates the electricity needed to illuminate the park sustainably.

A garden and water feature wind through the site, connected to a recycled water splash system. Water from the splash irrigates the garden and cycles back into the feature, creating a serene walkway with calming water sounds and naturally cooler air on hot summer days.

Additional amenities enhance the park’s functionality, including a basketball court, soccer field, parking spaces, and multiple gathering areas, offering a variety of recreational opportunities for the community.

This project was developed by the Community Engagement, Design, and Research Center (CEDaR) at the 51³Ô¹ÏÍø, drawn by CEDaR research assistant Amin Shafaeian, and funded by The Office for Public and Community-Engaged Scholarship. Through its combination of sustainability, recreation, and inclusive design, the project reimagines an empty block as a dynamic center for social interaction, play, and relaxation, fostering community connection while providing safe, accessible outdoor space for all residents.Ìý
